 'A COMPLICATED
HISTORY WITH HAIR'

Sanxtuary Magazine prescribes themselves as an annual fashion, beauty & culture magazine which exclusively features work by BIPOC and/or queer creatives.

My poem 'A Complicated History with Hair' has been featured within their latest edition 'The Inner Child Issue', described as 'journeying back to that time when we listened to our gut, our aspirations, and our innocence. This issue unearths the creations that are made when we listen to that inner child.  What did that inner child have to say?'

The poem itself holds dear to my heart, growing up so much of the bullying I faced stemmed from my hair. I always wonder why kids would poke fun at someone for something so silly but it does have a strong impact on how many black girls view themselves. I hope for all black girls, no matter the texture or length to understand and admire the beauty of their hair. BLACK HAIR IS GORGEOUS, it's become my pride and joy, the way I express myself. With this poem, I hope to further install Black Joy in our youths.
