‘Black codes’
Encrypting the codings of my black youth

‘Black Codes’ reimagines the foregrounds of 'Nubiance' within a new construct, stimulating binding together my scattered memory of a far away childhood as I reconnect the muddled ethnic duality born from growing up in the Midlands as a young African girl. The piece works as a print collage that visaulises nostalgic childhood pictures retelling fond moments alongside various QR codes encrypted with a range of spoken word poetry, sound pieces and film that unearth the essence of my black youth. ‘Black Codes’ was first presented as part of Queer Youth Art's 'Dream this Silly' Exhibition, running through 4th October-6th December 2024.
Audiences are welcomed to scan the QR codes to listen to the various audio/film pieces. You may also scan the print virtually through here.
